Getting Lost

The fluttering flags on top of the yellow tents looked as if they were waving to me to join in the fun on this bright and balmy day. I pulled at my parents' hands to make them walk faster. As we approached the fairgrounds, I could see many people milling around and hear excited screams and shouts. After buying our tickets, we joined the jolly scene.

"Knock something down and win a prize" cried a man at a booth.

Eager to try, I stuffed a dollar note into the man's hand. On the third try, I knocked down a little stuffed monkey. I whooped with joy, jumping like a jack-in-the-box. A grin stretched from ear to ear. My parents chuckled at my exuberance.

Suddenly, something caught my eye. I moved in for a closer look. A juggler was tossing several balls into the air. Later, he even balanced himself on one leg and threw one ball from under the other leg. I clapped and cheered with the crowd. I could not peel my eyes off him. When he finished, he bowed. As he walked into his tent, everyone began to disperse.

I looked around for my parents but saw only strangers. I walked faster, swivelling my head for a glimpse of them, but i did not see them. With a sinking heart, I realised I had lost them. I gripped my stuffed monkey tightly as panic made my knees feel like jelly. I ran with out knowing where I was going. Tears began clouding my eyes. Where were my parents? How was I to find them? The place felt scary now. Someone bumped into me causing me to drop my stuffed monkey. I quickly picked it up.

I looked at my stuffed monkey and into its eyes. As I stared at them, I heard my mother's words ring in my mind. "If you ever get lost, go to the information counter." I knew what I should do, but where was the counter?

I looked around and spotted a pair of teenage girls laughing. They looked friendly. Plucking up courage, I walked up to them. "Could you tell me where the information counter is, please?" I said in my most polite tone.

They smiled and one of them said, "See that big bright red balloon up there? That's where it is."

My eyes followed her pointing finger. "Thank you!" I replied, before I took off like a bullet.

As I raced up to the counter, I saw a couple rushing to me. "Mum! Dad!" I yelled as I launched myself at them. My mother wrapped me in a bear hug, almost suffocating me. Then it was my father's turn. I felt safe again. After I had finished relating my story to them, they praised me for staying calm and taking the right actions.

The stuffed monkey now sits on my bookshelf as a reminder of the day I got lost at the funfair and the day which I learnt to become more careful.
